Middle School (7th and 8th grade) years are both very exciting, but also a vulnerable time of life when students search for themselves.  Each individual is on a journey to define him/herself academically, socially and emotionally.  Internally, students experience uncertainty and look to their environment and their culture for guidance.  Montessori understood the importance of a specially prepared environment for adolescents that supports their development processes and their goal of self actualization by presenting each student with high, but attainable standards and individualized goals.   In a Montessori middle school, students and teachers together negotiate the process of education.  Education is not imposed upon students from outside of themselves.
